How to Remove Musty Smell from Towels — A Step-by-Step Fix (2026)

You wash your towels regularly, you fold them, you put them away. Yet within hours of use they smell musty again — that damp, sour, slightly-mildewed scent that no amount of detergent seems to fix. The good news: this is one of the most common towel problems in Indian homes, and it's almost always caused by the same two culprits. Fix them, and the smell goes away for good.

Why Towels Get Musty in the First Place

The smell is caused by bacteria and mildew trapped in the fabric fibres. Two things keep them there:

  1. Fabric softener buildup. Softener coats the fibres in a water-repellent waxy film. Over months, that film traps moisture, soap residue and bacteria inside the towel — no matter how thoroughly you wash.
  2. Incomplete drying. Towels folded while still damp inside (especially heavy GSM towels during monsoon) become a breeding ground within hours. Even 5% residual moisture is enough.

Both problems compound. Together they create that classic musty-towel smell that no perfumed detergent can mask.

The 4-Step Fix

  1. Step 1 — Strip out the softener. Run your towels through a hot wash with one cup of white vinegar and NO detergent. Vinegar dissolves the waxy softener film.
  2. Step 2 — Deodorise. Run a second wash with half a cup of baking soda and your normal detergent. Baking soda neutralises trapped odours.
  3. Step 3 — Dry completely. Tumble-dry on medium until fully dry (lift a towel and feel the centre fold — if there's any chill or weight, keep drying). Alternatively, line-dry in direct sunlight; UV is a natural disinfectant.
  4. Step 4 — Stop using softener. Cotton and bamboo-cotton towels don't need softener — they get softer with each wash naturally. Removing softener from your laundry routine is the single biggest care change you can make.

After this reset, your towels will smell clean again — and stay that way, as long as you skip the softener and dry them fully.

Prevent Future Musty Towels

  • Wash with mild detergent only — no fabric softener, no bleach
  • Don't overload the washer; towels need room to rinse
  • Make sure the centre fold is fully dry before folding away
  • Rotate two towels per person so one is always drying between uses
  • During monsoon, give towels a 15-minute sun bath when possible — even briefly kills surface bacteria

When Towels Are Past Saving

If your towels still smell musty after the vinegar + baking-soda reset, the fibres themselves have likely degraded. This is common with cheap microfibre and budget cotton towels after about 18 months of use. Premium long-staple cotton and bamboo-cotton blends rarely reach this stage.

When that happens, it's time to replace. We cover what to look for in a long-lasting bath towel in our → Complete Bath Towel Guide for Indian Homes.
