Wash & Care Guide
The right wash habits extend the life of a bedsheet or towel by years. The wrong ones — fabric softener, hot water, direct sun — are the reason most home textiles wear out early.
Cotton Bedsheets
| Temperature | 30–40°C (cold or lukewarm). Hot water weakens cotton fibres faster than anything else. |
| Cycle | Regular or gentle — cotton handles both. |
| Detergent | Mild liquid detergent. Avoid powder that leaves residue in the weave. |
| Bleach | Never chlorine bleach on coloured or printed sheets. Oxygen bleach (sodium percarbonate) is safe for whites. |
| Fabric softener | Skip it. Softener coats fibres and reduces breathability over time. Cotton softens naturally with washing. |
| Drying | Line dry in shade. Direct sun fades printed designs. Iron slightly damp at cotton setting for a crisp hotel finish. |
| First wash | Always wash before first use — removes factory finish and pre-shrinks the fabric. |
Cotton Bath Towels
| Temperature | 40°C for regular washes. 60°C once a month to sanitise — kills bacteria and mould. |
| Cycle | Regular cycle. Towels need agitation to fluff the pile. |
| Detergent | Regular mild detergent. Less is more — too much detergent leaves residue that makes towels feel rough. |
| Fabric softener | Never. Softener coats the terry loops and kills absorbency. If towels feel rough, add ½ cup white vinegar to the rinse cycle instead. |
| Drying | Line dry or tumble dry on medium. Shake out before drying to re-fluff the pile. Avoid damp folding — causes mildew smell. |
| How often | Every 3–4 uses. A towel used after a clean body dries out and is reusable — but not indefinitely. |
Bamboo-Cotton Towels
| Temperature | 30°C maximum. Bamboo fibres are finer than cotton and degrade faster in heat. |
| Cycle | Gentle cycle. Avoid heavy spin. |
| Detergent | Mild, gentle detergent — no enzyme-heavy formulas that attack bamboo fibres. |
| Fabric softener | Never. More critical than for cotton — softener permanently reduces bamboo absorbency. |
| Bleach | Never — chlorine or otherwise. Bamboo is naturally antibacterial; it does not need it. |
| Drying | Shade dry or tumble dry on low. Never high heat — bamboo fibres shrink and stiffen in high heat. |
| Tip | Bamboo towels become noticeably softer after the first 3–4 washes as the factory finish washes out. |
Waterproof Mattress Protectors
| Temperature | 40°C maximum. High heat damages the waterproof membrane. |
| Cycle | Gentle cycle. Harsh spin cycles stress the elastic edges. |
| Detergent | Mild liquid detergent. Avoid strong enzymatic formulas. |
| Bleach | Never — destroys the waterproof layer. |
| Fabric softener | Never — coats the membrane and reduces waterproofing. |
| Drying | Air dry completely before putting back on the mattress. Tumble dry on low if needed — never high heat. Ensure fully dry to prevent mildew under the protector. |
| How often | Every 1–2 months for regular use. Immediately after any spill or illness. |
7 Mistakes That Shorten Fabric Life
| Mistake | What it does | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Washing at too high a temperature | Weakens cotton fibres, causes shrinkage, fades colours | Use 30–40°C for everyday washes; 60°C only for sanitising towels |
| Using fabric softener on towels or bamboo | Coats fibres, kills absorbency permanently | Skip softener entirely — use white vinegar in rinse cycle if needed |
| Overloading the machine | Detergent does not rinse out fully, fabrics wear faster | Wash bedsheets separately; towels in a half-load at most |
| Drying bedsheets in direct sun | Fades printed designs and weakens coloured dyes | Shade dry or tumble dry on medium |
| Not washing before first use | Factory chemical finishes irritate skin; cotton not yet pre-shrunk | Always wash new bedsheets and towels before using |
| Using chlorine bleach on anything other than white cotton | Strips dye from colours, destroys bamboo and waterproof membranes | Use oxygen bleach only, on whites only |
| Folding towels while damp | Mildew forms in the fold lines within 24 hours | Dry fully before folding and storing |
Reading Wash Care Symbols
Care labels use standard symbols across all brands. Here are the ones that appear most on home textiles.
| Symbol / Label | Meaning | Applies to |
|---|---|---|
| 30 | Machine wash at 30°C maximum | Bamboo towels, delicate items |
| 40 | Machine wash at 40°C maximum | Cotton bedsheets, cotton towels |
| 60 | Machine wash at 60°C maximum | White cotton towels (sanitising only) |
| Do not bleach | No bleach of any kind | Coloured items, bamboo, waterproof protectors |
| Tumble dry low | Tumble dry on low heat only | Bamboo towels, mattress protectors |
| Do not tumble dry | Line dry only | Items with waterproof membrane, delicates |
| Iron low / medium | Iron at low or medium heat | Cotton bedsheets when slightly damp |
One rule to remember: no fabric softener on towels or bamboo — ever. It is the single habit that most shortens towel life and is the hardest to reverse once the coating builds up in the fibres.
