Towel GSM Explained: What 400, 500 & 600 GSM Mean
GSM (grams per square metre) is the weight of a towel's fabric per square metre — the quickest way to judge its thickness, absorbency and drying time. Bath towels typically range from 300 to 700 GSM: 300–400 GSM is light and quick-drying, 400–550 GSM is the everyday sweet spot, and 600 GSM and above is plush and hotel-like but slower to dry.
What GSM means in a towel
GSM stands for grams per square metre — literally how many grams one square metre of the towel fabric weighs. A 400 GSM towel is light and fast-drying; a 500 GSM towel is soft and absorbent for daily use; a 600 GSM towel is thick, plush and hotel-like but takes longer to dry. Higher GSM means more cotton per square metre — more absorbency and heft, at the cost of drying speed.
How GSM interacts with fibre & weave
GSM is not the only factor — fibre type and weave matter too. A 450 GSM bamboo towel can feel different from a 450 GSM cotton towel due to fibre diameter and yarn twist.
