Pillow Filling Types Explained (2026): Microfibre, Foam, Down-Alternative & Cotton

The fill inside a pillow decides how it feels, how well it supports your neck, how hot it sleeps and how long it lasts. Here is a plain-English comparison of the common fills sold in India so you can pick with confidence.

Microfibre / down-alternative

Fine polyester fibres mimic the plush softness of down without the price or the allergens. They are machine-washable, quick to re-fluff, and forgiving for most sleepers — which is why they are the default choice for Indian homes.

Memory foam

Foam contours to your head and neck and springs back slowly, giving steady support that is excellent for neck or shoulder pain. The trade-off is that solid foam can sleep warmer; shredded-foam versions breathe better and can be reshaped.

Cotton

A natural, breathable fill that stays cool and firm. It compresses to a low loft over time, which suits stomach sleepers and anyone who dislikes a tall, springy pillow.

Down and feather

The classic luxury fill — soft and mouldable — but it is pricier, needs regular fluffing, and is not ideal for allergy-prone sleepers. Down-alternative gets you a similar feel for less fuss.
