How to Style Cushions on a Bed and Sofa (2026): Simple Arrangements That Work

Cushions are the fastest, cheapest way to make a bed or sofa look styled. You do not need a designer — just a couple of simple formulas for how many to use, what sizes to mix, and how to layer them.

The bed formula

Work back to front, tallest to shortest. Sleeping pillows go against the headboard, then a layer of decorative cushions, then a small accent in front.

  • Single bed: 1 sleeping pillow + 1 cushion in front.
  • Double / Queen: 2 sleeping pillows + 2 square cushions + 1 accent (bolster or lumbar).
  • King: 2–3 sleeping pillows + 2–3 cushions + 1 long lumbar across the front.
  • Keep it to an odd or symmetrical count — it reads as intentional, not messy.

The sofa formula

  • Two-seater: 2 cushions, one in each corner.
  • Three-seater: 3–4 cushions — pairs in the corners, or 2 + 1 for an asymmetric look.
  • Sectional: cluster in the corner and taper outward; do not line them up like soldiers.
  • Mix one large square, one smaller square and one lumbar for depth.

Colour and pattern

  • Anchor with one or two solids that pick up a colour already in the room.
  • Add one patterned cushion as the star — do not make everything patterned.
  • Vary texture, not just colour, so the grouping has depth.
  • Tie cushions to your bedsheet or throw so the whole bed reads as one set.

Start with good inserts

Styling only looks good if the cushions are plump. Use full, supportive inserts rather than flat, tired ones — a fresh pillow or cushion set instantly lifts the whole arrangement.
