How to Fold a Fitted Sheet (2026): The Easy Step-by-Step Method

The elastic corners that keep a fitted sheet on the mattress are exactly what make it impossible to fold neatly — until you know the trick. The secret is tucking each corner into the next so the curves cancel out and you are left with straight edges.

Step-by-step

  1. Hold the sheet inside-out by two adjacent corners along one short edge, one hand in each corner like a pocket.
  2. Bring your hands together and fold the right-hand corner over the left, tucking it inside so the two corners nest.
  3. Reach down for the other two corners and do the same, tucking them over the first pair. You now have all four corners stacked in one hand.
  4. Lay the sheet on a flat surface. Straighten it into a rough rectangle and smooth out the elastic edge so it curves along one side.
  5. Fold the curved elastic edge in to make a clean straight edge, then fold the rectangle into thirds.
  6. Fold once or twice more to your shelf size. You will get a flat, tidy rectangle.

The 10-second shortcut

In a hurry? Fold the fitted sheet roughly, then wrap the whole set inside one of its matching pillowcases. It is not showroom-neat, but it keeps each set together and tidy on the shelf.

Why neat folding helps

  • Flat rectangles stack, so you can see and reach every set.
  • Keeping each fitted sheet with its flat sheet and covers saves hunting on bed-change day.
  • Less crushing means fewer set-in creases and a smoother look on the bed.
