Hostel Room Essentials List for Indian Students (2026)
Hostel
Moving to a hostel is one of those things every Indian student handles roughly the same way — over-pack on personal items, under-pack on the basics. This list is the no-nonsense version: what you actually need for the bed and bathroom, sized correctly, and on a student budget.
Bedding Essentials
- 2 × single bedsheets (152 × 228 cm) — one on the bed, one being washed
- 1 × mattress protector (waterproof, single size) — protects the hostel mattress, makes it more hygienic to sleep on
- 2 × pillow covers (40 × 60 cm standard)
- 1 × dohar or light blanket for cooler nights
- 1 × bedsheet for laundry-day swaps
Bathroom Essentials
- 2 × bath towels (cotton, 400–500 GSM works perfectly — light enough to dry overnight)
- 3 × hand towels for the basin and quick wipe-downs
- 1 × small towel for face/hair
- 1 × bath robe or wrap for shared bathroom trips
What Most Students Forget
- Pillow inserts — hostel pillows are often thin or absent. A 1-piece foam pillow is ₹400–₹600 and worth it
- Mattress topper — if your hostel mattress is hard. A 2-inch foam topper transforms sleep
- A laundry bag for transporting clothes to the wash
- A separate towel for the gym/sports if you're active
What to Skip
- Heavy comforters — most hostels don't have winter that cold; a dohar plus a light blanket suffices
- King-size bedding — single-bed sized only
- Matching decorative pillows — you'll never use them
- Anything dry-clean only — hostel washes are rough
